ABOUT

I’m Carl Gaffney, a self-taught charcoal artist based in the North West of England.

I've loved drawing since I was young, but it wasn't until later in life that I began developing a style that really felt like my own. I love charcoal as a medium; the ability to create rich, dark blacks and yet also produce very fine and delicate details.

I would describe my work as contemporary realism. I create very realistic drawings, but I don't just replicate what I see. I try to create art that tells a story, whether that is literal or open to interpretation.

My work is a way of processing emotion, and each piece draws on my own experience and the world around me. I hope you find something in it that feels like yours.

An original charcoal drawing by Carl Gaffney. It is a self-portrait in a hyper realism style, the background is very dark and the lighting moody.
